Gallery Hire

Shed 11 can be hired for corporate events. Bookings are accepted at the discretion of the Director and the Board of Trustees of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery.

Shed 11 provides an excellent space for corporate and private events. It:

  • is located in the heart of the city, right on the waterfront
  • is an elegant, spacious heritage building
  • earthquake strengthened 
  • can accommodate up to 300 people standing or 100 people at a seated dinner function, or 200 seated, lecture style 
  • provides a large, uncluttered space
  • can be partitioned into smaller spaces as required
  • has a basic small kitchen, equipped with a double drawer dishwasher, small refrigerator, and bench space
  • has space adjacent to the kitchen where food can be set out, ready for serving
  • has a BOSE sound system
  • has 70 folding chairs
  • usually has an exhibition or a selection of the Gallery’s own collection on display

Shed 11 is normally available for exclusive hire every night from 5.30pm until 10.30pm for $1,000 + GST and for morning events from 7am to 10am for $600 + GST.  The Gallery opens to the public at 10.30 am and closes at 4.30pm. The setting up and tidying away of events needs to be completed outside those hours so that public access to the gallery is not disrupted.

Shed 11 is also available from time to time for exhibitions from other organisations where the exhibition is broadly related to the objectives of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery.

Booking applications are accepted only if the events are considered reasonable and appropriate. Strict terms and conditions apply in order to safeguard the recently refurbished gallery and artworks on display. Please note that food and drink is not permitted in the main gallery during certain exhibitions - please contact the gallery for further advice.
