Barbara Anderson (b1926 –2013)

Short story writer and novelist Barbara Anderson trained as a medical technologist, raised a family and supported her husband in his distinguished naval career; only in her sixties did she realise a long-term interest in being a writer. Her first collection of short stories, I Think We Should Go into the Jungle (1989), was immediately acclaimed.

In the subsequent novels and in her autobiography, her distinctive voice, as well as her compassion and understanding of the absurdities and intricate relationships that make up the human condition, have earned her a number of national awards and have made her one of New Zealand’s best-selling authors.
