Not Just My Face! brings together works that defy the conventions of traditional portraiture and explores strategies used to communicate diverse identities through portraiture.
In 1935, Frances Hodgkins created a self-portrait out of a still-life. She discarded the figure and embraced the metaphorical potential of her material possessions to communicate her personality and interests.
More recently, artists have continued to challenge us to consider the limitations of traditional portraiture and the possibilities available for representing identity.
Featuring works by Frances Hodgkins, Gina Matchitt, Hemi MacGregor, Julia Holden, Rebecca Swann and more.
