Inside Out

Quentin Dumortier, the Embassy of France and the New Zealand Portrait Gallery invite you to discover INSIDE OUT NZ.

Since early January, French traveller Quentin Dumortier has been paving the streets of Wellington, taking photographic portraits of passer-by as part of the global participative art project, INSIDE OUT.

High scale pictures are to be displayed at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery from March 10th
On March 8th, from 9:00am until 5:00pm, Wellingtonians are invited to join in the project by taking part in the setting up of the exhibition, sticking their own or another’s portrait on the wall .

Inside Out around the world
In 2011, French street artist, JR called for the creation of a global participatory art project, called INSIDE OUT: a global platform that transforms messages of personal identity into works of public art. Using black-and-white portraits, the idea is for anyone to help dis-cover, reveal and share the untold stories and images of people from around the world.
The INSIDE OUT project has gone from Ecuador to Nepal, from Mexico to Palestine, inspiring group actions on varied themes such as hope, diversity, gender-based violence, climate change. Over 120,000 people from more than 108 countries have participated.

Inside Out in Wellington
Quentin Dumortier brought the project to Wellington in early 2014, taking impromptu portraits of local residents all around the city.

Quentin’s artistic approach:
“The goal is to take over the city of Wellington, to be a part of its artistic expression and to create an alive area of human activity. The project also aims to raise questions about the power of images in a world of images. Highlighting particularly expressive anonymous faces, from smiles to tears, joy to astonishment, grimaces to serenity, spreads a message about personal narratives which, put together, reveals backgrounds and highlights common destinies. ”

Quentin Dumortier
Quentin is an art enthusiast, with a particularly interest for street art and performing arts. He enjoys art being communicative and involving large crowds. A social worker in Paris, Quentin works mostly with youngsters living in rough suburbs. A keen traveller, he regularly seeks adventure, discovering the world and bringing back home a wealth of ideas. Deeply inspired by French street artist JR, Quentin, freshly arrived in New Zealand, saw Wellington as the perfect environment to create his project.
