In 1935, Frances Hodgkins created a self-portrait out of a still-life. In Still Life: Self Portrait, Hodgkins discarded the figure and embraced the metaphorical potential of her material possessions to communicate her personality and interests.
As our understanding of the complexity of identity has expanded, artists have continued to challenge us to consider the limitations of traditional portraiture and the possibilities available for representing identity.
