Love and Marriage: Images of Romantic Unions
- New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata Shed 11, 60 Lady Elizabeth Lane Wellington New Zealand (map)
Love and marriage may be universal, but their mutual inclusivity is not. What can a wedding photograph tell us about the love shared between two people? How can portraiture better inform us about the experience of being in love?
Love and Marriage is an invitation to explore the myriad ways romantic partnerships are defined, expressed, and felt. Drawing together works from photographic archives and art collections, we are asked to consider the differences that exist between cultural norms and lived experiences, testing our assumptions about what defines love in New Zealand.

We want you to show us what love looks like in Aotearoa, from your own perspective.
It might be your wedding photo, a couple’s selfie taken at a special location, or a picture of an object that symbolises the love you and your partner share. You may even share images of a couple whose love you admire or aspire to. Once uploaded, your image will be displayed on this webpage for you to view.
By submitting your works you agree that the New Zealand Portrait Gallery will reproduce your images online for the purpose of the Love and Marriage Exhibition. Should we wish to use your image for any other purpose, permission will be sought.
