Terms and Conditions of Entry
These terms and conditions are relevant to the 2025 competition and are subject to change
DEFINITIONS
‘Young artist’ refers to artists 35 years of age, or younger, at the time of the Award Ceremony of the relevant competition. Artists entering the 2025 competition must be born after 21 May 1989.
‘Maaori’ is defined by adopting the description of Maaori set out in section 2 of the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975, and meaning: “…a person of the Maaori race of New Zealand, and includes any descendant of such a person.”
‘Portrait’ can be interpreted in its widest sense of images concerned with te ao Maaori portrayal of people, with emphasis on their identity as individuals. The portrait can be depicted by any medium or mixed media such as and not limited to: paint, carved wood, metal, glass, feathers, flax and electronic or other imagery.
‘Tikanga Maaori’ means Maaori customs and traditional values
‘Tupuna’ refers to ancestor(s), the definition of which will be judged based upon the statement provided and interpreted by the judges within tikanga Maaori.
ENTRY CRITERIA
Entrants must be young Maaori artists, aged 35 or under.
Limit of one entry per person.
An entrant may submit an artwork that has been created in collaboration with others, with the permission of those collaborators. The entrant must be a young Maaori artist with whakapapa connections to the depicted tupuna.
A work is not eligible for entry if it has received any awards.
Portraits must be of a tupuna of the artist.
Portraits must have been completed in the last 2 years.
Portraits must not have used any element of artificial intelligence, commonly referred to as “AI”, in the creation of the portrait, in whole or in part.
The subject must either be known to the artist and aware of the artists intentions, or the artist must seek permission from the appropriate person or persons where whaanau consent should be required prior to the portrait being created.
The portrait can be expressed in either traditional or modern artistic forms but should not be offensive in the context of tikanga Maaori.
Entrants must have permissions from any copyright holders or customary owner(s) of intellectual property used as source material in the creation of the work.
The entry fee of $50 is payable for each entry and must accompany the entry form. The entry fee is to cover administrative costs and is not refundable if work is not shortlisted. Any entry not accompanied by an entry form and payment will not be eligible for the competition.
SUBMISSION
Entries are to be submitted via entry form on the New Zealand Portrait Gallery website, with accompanying digital photographic image, audio file or video link (as appropriate) for judging.
Entries should include an artist biography of no more than 80 words, confirming you are of Maaori descent and your iwi affiliations, if known, also outlining your career and experience as an artist.
Entries must also include a statement of no more than 80 words, about your chosen tupuna and your relationship to them.
Entries and documentation will be retained and will form part of the Gallery’s records.
THE COMPETITION
The competition is divided into two phases:
a) Short listing Phase: Artists will be notified by email as to whether their work has been shortlisted or not. If selected as a finalist, instructions for submitting original works for exhibition will be sent via email. Shortlisted artworks should be packaged appropriately. All courier and insurance costs and costs of display supports for the presentation of the artworks are at the expense of the artist.
b) Hanging and Judging Phase: Shortlisted artworks will be exhibited for approximately three months. The winners will be notified, and first prize and runner up announced at the opening, to which all finalists will be invited. The People’s Choice winner will be announced at the culmination of the exhibition in Wellington.
JUDGES
Te Kiingi Tuheitia will appoint a panel of three judges to assess the artistic merit of the works and rule on any tikanga Maaori issues, should they arise.
The judges and Gallery reserve the right to decline to accept an entry or disqualify an entry.
The judges reserve the right not to award the prize if no entry is considered deserving of an award.
The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
PRIZES
First prize: $20,000
Runner up: $2,500
People’s Choice: $2,500
The first-prize winning artwork will become part of the collection of the Kiingitanga.
EXHIBITION AND SALE
Finalist artists whose work is selected for exhibition can choose to offer work for sale - this must be indicated when the work is submitted for exhibition. The Gallery will deduct a commission of 30% including GST on work sold.
The Gallery and any venue showing the exhibition will take all reasonable care of exhibits and will insure the artworks while in their care.
Artists are responsible for appropriately packing and insuring their works for transit.
Artists must supply all necessary display supports to enable the presentation of their work.
Ownership and of the winning portrait will be transferred to the collection of the Kiingitanga Sovereign to be kept in perpetuity.
TOUR
Artworks must be available to tour for up to 24 months following the closure of the exhibition in Wellington.
Not all finalist artworks are guaranteed to be included in the tour, or displayed at all touring venues.
By entering the competition entrants:
1. warrant that they own the artwork submitted and that the copyright of the work is vested in them or, if this is not so, that the work is submitted with the permission of the current owner and/or holder of copyright as may be the case.
2. warrant that they have obtained the appropriate permissions either from the person(s) featured in their submitted artwork, or consent from whanau or descendants.
3. warrant that they have obtained appropriate releases from any copyright holders or customary owner(s) of intellectual property used as source material in the creation of the artwork.
4. agree that their artwork may be exhibited at any venue organised by the Gallery and that the portrait will be available for a period of up to 24 months, should the work be selected to tour.
5. acknowledge and accept that the Gallery’s tikanga, developed in consultation with mana whenua and the Kiingitanga is to allow food and drink to be served in the exhibition space after artworks on display have been appropriately blessed and tapu lifted.
6. agree that the Gallery and exhibition sponsors shall have a licence to reproduce images of the artwork for sales/publicity/educational and reference purposes in connection with the Award.
7. warrant that, with the exception of the winning exhibit, the artwork is theirs to sell, should they wish to, and agree to accept the price they specify at the time of submission of the work (less gallery commission).

Me whakauru tahi he pitopito kōrero e 80 ngā kupu te roa e pā ana ki tō tūpuna me tōu whanaungatanga ki a ia.

TE WHAKATAETAE
E rua ngā wāhanga o te whakataetae:
a) Te wāhanga whāiti: Mā te īmēra te kaitoi e whakamōhio mehemea kua whāiti tāna mahinga toi, kāore rānei. Ki te whiria hei toi whāiti, ka whakamāramatia te tukuna mai o ngā toi motuhake hei whakaata, mā te īmēra. Me tika te tākai pōhi o te toi whāiti ka tukuna mai. Mā te kaitoi ngā utu me te inihua hei pīkau.
b) Te wāhanga whakanoi me te whakawā: Ka toru marama te mahinga toi whāiti e whakaatungia ana. Ka whakamōhiotia ngā toa, engari ka pānuitia te toa me te tuarua i te pō tonu o te tūwheratanga, ā, ka pōwhiritia ngā kaitoi whāiti katoa ki taua pō. Ka pānuitia te toa o te whiringa-a-iwi i te pito whakamutunga o te whakaaturanga i Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
NGĀ KAIWHAKAWĀ

TE WHAKAATURANGA ME NGĀ HOKONGA
Ko ngā ringatoi ka kōwhirihia hei whakaatu i ā rātou mahi ka āhei kia hokona atu - me whakamōhio mai i te wā ka tukua mai te mahi hei whakaatu. Ka tangohia e Te Pūkenga Whakaata te 30 ōrau (tae atu ki te tāke hokohoko) ina hokona atu.
Ka tika te tiaki a Te Pūkenga Whakaata me ngā whare whakaatu i te mahinga toi i a te toi e noho ana ki a raatou, mā rātou anō te inihua e utu mō taua wā.
