Friday 8 November

5 pm - 6 pm

Join us at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery to celebrate the artworks of Robyn Kahukiwa through the medium of music. Amy Clough, a Master of Fine Arts oboe student, in collaboration with musicians from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra – Te Tira Pūoro o Aotearoa, will be presenting a programme inspired by the exhibition Robyn Kahukiwa: Tohunga Mahi Toi.

The music will explore the roots of New Zealand art, music and how musical works take on new meanings against the backdrop of Kahukiwa’s portraits. The programme will include works for solo oboe, string trio, oboe and string quartet and wind duo. Celebrating New Zealand art, there will be musical items from composers such as Gillian Whitehead, Salina Fisher, and Alfred Hill.

The recital will also feature a newly commissioned work by Master of Fine Arts composer Brendan Galvin, inspired by elements of the exhibition, and arrangements of several of Felix Mendelssohn’s Songs without Words for oboe and string quartet. An evening in Te Whanganui-a-Tara with some of the finest musicians from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, as well as emerging talent from the New Zealand School of Music, this event is not to be missed.
